The Newbury International Orchid Show was started in the mid-1990s by a small group of orchid enthusiasts as a part of the Newbury Garden and Leisure Show, held over a weekend in mid-June each year at the Newbury Show Ground.  From small beginnings it grew year by year becoming the largest annual orchid show in the UK, with exhibitors from all over the UK and many parts of Europe, and from as far afield as USA, Ecuador, Brazil, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and New Zealand.  It continued until the host event's demise following the 2005 Show.

After a one-year hiatus this much-loved event restarted in 2007, as large as ever, as the Peterborough International Orchid Show.  The event's new and welcoming host was the long-established East of England Show, held each June (July in 2012) in Peterborough.

Sadly, shortly after the 2012 show, the Committee of the host East of England Show decided that their event would cease due to increasing and significant financial losses.  This left the Orchid Show once again without a home so the independent organising group immediately set to work looking at alternatives.  Early success came with an invitation from the popular and well-established Royal Three Counties Show held in mid-June each year in Malvern, Worcestershire, to host the event as the Malvern International Orchid Show starting in 2013; cue the choir celestial!

. . . we'll be there!

A consistant and continuing feature of the Show has been its gentle competitive spirit, with around a dozen classes in which all display plants in the Show are judged, with First and Second place ribbons being awarded and trophies for Best Species and Best Hybrid in the Show.  There are also medals for displays and a trophy for Best Display in the Show.  Originally these awards were solely for Society displays and amateur-grown plants, but since the advent of Peterborough have been "doubled up" with a matching set of awards for professional and trade exhibitors.  In addition, in more recent years, a meeting of the RHS Orchid Committee has become a regular feature of the Show, giving the opportunity for the many fine plants on show to be considered for RHS awards.

The Malvern International Orchid Show has its own web site . . .

We are very proud to have staged displays of Members' plants at every Malvern/Newbury/Peterborough Show since the event's inception.  We are equally proud to have come away each year with various awards - one or more of the major trophies and RHS awards in some years and always several ribbons for Members' plants and a medal for the display.

Highlights of various years' efforts including a selection of photographs are available here on a series of separate pages, one per Show; just click on the appropriate navigation button below.  Please bear in mind that these pages are still "works in progress"; we will cover all the Shows more fully as time allows and relevant material is located.
